Alannah Jury

  • I started swimming at NSS in 1999 at the age of 8.
  • I didn't qualify for a National level event until I was 13, when I went to Div 2 & then on to Nationals a year later.
  • My first NZ medal was at the Open water Champs in 2008 in the 5km event. (2nd in Opens and 1st 16year old)
  • I swam my first 10km race in Queensland, Australia in October 2008. Finishing in 1hr 58minutes
  • My first New Zealand team selection was in 2008, for the 2009 Australian Youth Olympic Festival. I won the bronze medal in the 800m freestyle and set a 17yrs NZ Record
  • In January 2009 at the NZ Open Water Champs I was 2nd in the Open category in both the 5km and 10km events.
  • In February 2009 I competed in the Australian Open Water Champs. I was 1st in my age group and 3rd Open Female. By coming in the top 4 I gained a place on the NZ team to go to the World Champs in Rome.
  • After the Australian Champs I went straight into NZ NAGs. There I won my first NZ pool medals. I got gold in the 200m, 400m & 800m freestyle and silver in the 100m free and 200m fly.
  • In May 2009, whilst in heavy training, I broke the Auckland Age & Senior record for 1500m free short course.
  • Between March and July it was into some serious training before heading off to the World Champs in Italy.
  • At the World Champs I came 28th in the 5km event, which we treated as a warm up swim and 13th in the 10km event. During the 10km race another swimmer accidentally pulled off my goggles and I had to swim 400m before getting a new pair. So after the first 2.5km I was in 44th place, so I had to make up a lot of ground.
  • My next major goals are to qualify again for the NZ team to the 2010 Open Water Champs in Canada, and to swim my best at National level meets in NZ.
  • North Shore Swim club has always supported me, even over all those years when I was doing lots of training but not achieving any significant success. There have been many different coaches, all of whom I have been able to learn new things from. As Jan Cameron said to my squad when I was about 13yrs old, just enjoy your swimming for now as there are no world champions at 13yr and let me know if you still want to be a swimmer at around age 17.
  • I like the saying "What part of just do it don't you understand?"
